New Music Picks - 24th Sept
At the start of this year I really wasn’t digging a lot of the new music in the charts, but as 2018 has gone on I’ve been thoroughly spoiled with the songs and artists returning to the radio (or should I say Spotify?)… Some of my all-time favourite singer-songwriters are coming back with new material this month. Here are the newest songs I’m excited about:
Avril Lavigne - Head Above Water
Head Above Water is Avril Lavigne’s first music release in 6 years and the first track of an album made during her long and painful struggle with Lyme Disease. She recently wrote a letter to her fans describing how music helped her get through her fight and how she has poured so much of herself into this record. You can definitely feel real emotion in this new track and it is going to be so inspirational to people who need a reminder to keep going through the dark times.
I love how melodic and honest Avril’s songs are and Head Above Water feels like an instant classic already. I can’t wait for the whole album and to hear her journey over the last few years.
Carrie Underwood - Love Wins
I’ve got to say, a song like this was a bold move for someone like Carrie who I imagine as an All-American Country Gal TM has a lot of bible-bashing, hatemongering Trump supporters as part of her fanbase. Most country stars stay out of anything resembling political talk and keep the ground neutral. So to use the phrase most associated with the LGBTQ community as the title of her single and have such clear messages of loving everyone no matter who they are is pretty darn bold. You only have to look at the Youtube comments to know she is opening herself up to a whole world of hate, moreso than perhaps artists from other genres would get for this type of track.
So kudos to you Carrie. This is a beautiful song with a beautiful message and it’s going to help a lot of people. Love the video too!
Dolly Parton & Sia - Here I Am
I fricking love Dolly Parton. She is such an inspirational woman and she always manages to stay relevant in the music industry without compromising her identity in any way. Her new collaboration with the almighty Sia is the first of a whole soundtrack to the new Netflix movie Dumplin’ based on a YA novel. There is literally nothing I do not love about this entire concept and I cannot wait to see/hear more!
Dodie - Human
My love for Dodie and her entire self-made music career knows no bounds and I’m super excited that she has a new album on the way. This is the first single and title track for Human and as well as being a beautiful, thought-provoking ballad, it has a beautiful, thought-provoking video to boot directed by the indie film-making legend and Youtuber Hazel Hayes. If this is the start of the new era of Dodie then I am very excited for whatever comes next.
Lana Del Rey - Venice Bitch
I swear it was only five seconds ago that lovely Lana released her last album and now suddenly she’s back again with more music. This woman is a machine, but I love it. You know the drill by now when it comes to her songs. Dreamy, nostalgic, retro, seventies-vibes. Yeah, it’s the same as all the others, but it’s gorgeous like all the others too. And this track goes on for nearly ten whole minutes, leaving you in some kind of mesmerised trance until it suddenly stops and you’re all, hey what the hell just happened? Can you put it on again?
Also “fresh out of fucks forever” is the greatest second line to any song ever. I’m just saying.
Lennon Stella - Bad
Fans of Nashville will recognise this young lady and her beautiful voice - although Lennon’s real life solo style is quite different to her onscreen character Maddie. Bad is a really unusual, quirky yet sultry pop track with a video that really shows our little Stella sister is all grown up. I’m looking forward to hearing what comes next from her!
There have been a few more releases that have really caught my ear lately but I think I might be too late to the bandwagon to consider them “new”… I’ll definitely post up more recommendations as I hear them though and let me know yours too!
