Hey hey everyone! How is August over already?! A lot of my faves made comebacks this month, hope you enjoy my latest picks!
"Summer Girl" - HAIM
HAIM are one of the greatest bands of our generation and their comeback track "Summer Girl" is effortlessly cool, modern, summery and amazing. Love these girls sooo much and really excited for their new material.
"South Of The Border" - Ed Sheeran Feat. Camila Cabello & Cardi B
Another new track from Ed's new collaborations album and it's a total banger. Ed and Camila make a great duo, the chorus hook is super catchy and Cardi B's rap is ICONIC. "Drop an album, drop a baby, but I never drop the ball." Preach, sister.
"boyfriend" - Ariana Grande & Social House
Ariana literally cannot stop dropping bops this year. She's a bop-dropping machine. This new track is... OK, it's kind of typical Ariana and it's not doing anything her other songs aren't doing, but I like it and Social House is a cool duet partner and the video is hilarious. So there you go.
"Milkshake" - Red Velvet
My K-Pop Queens are back with a new mini-album for the summer and "Milkshake" is the perfect, upbeat, feel-good track for dancing in the sunshine. The music video is so cute and colourful too, although let's face it, we'd expect nothing less from the RV girls.
"fuck, i'm lonely" - Lauv & Anne-Marie
I really love Lauv's dreamy pop tracks and I am a huge Anne-Marie fan so this is a perfect collaboration for me. It's an understated mid-tempo electropop duet that really lets the pair's vocals and lyrics shine. They sound great. They say fuck a lot. What more do you want in a pop song?
"whywhywhy" - Misterwives
Misterwives pricked my ears up a few years back with their boppy, indie sound and this comeback is in the same vein - the verses build up to a truly uplifting, air-punch moment of a chorus hook. I REALLY like it!
"OMG" - Gryffin & Carly Rae Jepsen
A surprise new song from Carly Bae? We are too blessed. This is a typical "dancey thing FEAT person" sort of song, but the chorus is really lovely. Carly never releases anything not great!
"All For Us" - Labrinth & Zendaya
I am obsessed with the new show "Euphoria" starring Zendaya and this "theme song" track and accompanying video is a stunning piece of art. Zendaya has shot to a new level with this show and Labrinth has said on the record this is one of his favourite projects he has ever worked on. Incredible.
"Kick It" - Natasha Bedingfield
I am a massive Natasha Bedingfield fan, her early albums were a staple of my youth and I think her later albums were severely underrated pop masterpieces, so I am naturally really excited about her comeback. "Kick It" is kind of restrained, not exactly an immediate hit, but there is something really vibey about it and it's definitely a real grower. An interesting direction and I'm curious about what will come next.
"Small Talk" - Katy Perry
This is the second release from the brand new era of Katy Perry, and whilst it's not as much of a total banger as "Never Really Over", it's still a really cute little tune with amazing lyrics on the topic of social awkwardness around an ex-lover. LOVE the lyric video too, it's practically a music video all on its own!
"Waste My Time" - Grace VanderWaal
Another gorgeous, dreamy, fresh-sounding number from the amazingly talented Grace VanderWaal. I love everything she puts out, so excited for her new album.
"Truth Hurts" - Lizzo
Yeah, I know, I have a Lizzo song on my playlist every single month, but I haven't included this one yet, and let's face it, IT'S THE BEST ONE. Big sassy singalong for the new generation of young people, I need to stop being old and learn all the words.
"Piece Of Your Heart" - Meduza Feat. Goodboys
Another one for the "chavvy dance tracks I inexplicably like" pile. The part where they keep the ad-lib talking is what sells it for me. And come on, it's such a catchy hook!
"Live Forever" - Nasty Cherry
Nasty Cherry is a new all-girl rock band, which I am total sucker for, and even better this track is written by Charli XCX. Sassy, teen movie vibes. They need way more fans so go listen.
"Mess With My Head" - Miranda Lambert
The queen of country is back, returning with a sassy, rocky number. The chorus is really addictive and her vocals sound as great as ever.
"Lover" - Taylor Swift
Taylor Swift released her new album and latest single this month - it has taken me a while to get into this era (I admit I kind of miss sassy, angry Tay Tay), but this song is very sweet and romantic with a gorgeous music video, it grows on me more with every listen. I can definitely see it being a first dance favourite at weddings!
"When The Booth Goes Bright" - Amelie Original Cast Recording
After seeing the amazing Amelie stage musical this month, I have literally not stopped singing this song. It's such an adorable, Mumford & Sons infused theatrical number all about the philosophy of love, life and photo booths. Just adorable.
"Prophet" - King Princess
I heard this on an indie playlist and OH WOW it's soooo cool. Smooth, smokey vocals against a jazzy beat, amazing lyrics - a band to watch.
"Magic Carpet Ride" - Mazila Feat. Corinna Jane
My good friend Corinna Jane has been working on quite a few dance tracks at the moment alongside her usual singer-songwriter genre. Her latest featured appearance is on this Mazila track which she toplined - I love the Arabian Nights, dreamy, magical feel with all the ethereal vocals. Perfect for a nighttime summer drive!
"Never Know" - Thunderpussy
I discovered this band on the "She Makes Music" all-girl music blog. They are called THUNDERPUSSY. And they ROCK. I love all-girl rock and roll bands like The Donnas and I feel these ladies will fill the 2019 space in my heart for this specific genre.
"Hard To Forget Ya" - Britney Spears
I recently got the Britney Spears Glory album and this totally trashy track always comes up on my shuffle and I freaking love it. So enjoy.
"Hypersonic Missiles" - Sam Fender
I am really pricking my ears up at Sam Fender lately, every song he does is really solid. Hypersonic Missiles is kind of indie meets singer-songwriter in style and his awesome vocals with the catchy chorus make for a great, slightly bittersweet listen.
"People" - The 1975
I am such a fangirl of The 1975 and when I first heard this new punk sound, I was really surprised and not sure what to think about it... But by the end of the song, I knew this was a full-on political banger that will be a huge, huge track for them. It's angry, it's passionate, it reflects the times and I love it.
"I Know Where It's At" - All Saints
We saw All Saints playing at Victorious Festival this month and they were ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE. They have amazing vocals, a tight live band and literal buckets of choons that are still just as credible in 2019 as they were in the early 00s. I Know Where It's At was their opening number and we all went crazy for it, so hope you enjoy this throwback tune as much as we all did!
"Only Human" - Jonas Brothers
I love every single from the latest Jonas Brothers record and this is another banger. It has a kind of reggae feel and is effortlessly cool. Great summer choon JoBros.
"Mama" - Ella Eyre, Banx & Ranx & Kiana Lede
This song and music video really caught my attention on TV - I love the tongue-in-cheek theme and the Latino vibes. I also love the lady who plays Mama, she's amazing. Really fun, but doesn't lose it's cool either. I think this will do well in the charts.
"Teeth" - 5 Seconds Of Summer
I do love me a driving 5SOS song (Youngblood and Easier are CHOONS) - this one is right up there with their best work with rocky guitar riffs, a smash hit of a chorus and really cool, edgy lyrics. They just keep getting better and better!
"New Friends" - Maty Noyes
This track got recommended to me by Youtube and I feel thoroughly intrigued by this girl - the song and music video are really quirky and I love the cynical teen vibes. Gonna check out more of Maty for sure.
"Fuck It I Love You" - Lana Del Rey
Lana Del Rey returns with epic, sweeping, Americana, retro Lana Del Rey song that sounds exactly like all her other songs. But if it ain't broke, why fix it? Another beautiful addition to her back catalogue. You know what you're gonna get, but it's still a gorgeous ride.
"Cold" - James Blunt
I am such a James Blunt fangirl, always have been, always will be. He's one of the best artists I've ever seen live and I see him every tour. This new track is really sweet with folky melodies, nothing particularly new for him but a solid addition to his musical repertoire!
"Heaven/Hell" - CHVRCHES
Ending this month’s playlist on a song from last year, but IT’S SUCH A CHOON and I’ve been listening to it whenever it comes on my shuffle. So why not share the love?!
See you all again soon at the end of Sept! :)
