New Music Picks - 2nd November 2018
I love music a lot, and there are LOTS AND LOTS of GREAT artists releasing a ton of great stuff right now. I’ve been making a list of recent tracks that have popped up and really caught my attention… Some are a little more recent than others, but here are my recommendations from the past few months:
Sara Bareilles - Armor
American singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles is my QUEEN and her new single is one of her greatest yet. An upbeat, sassy number about female fierceness with insanely good, poetic lyrics. I bow before her feet.
Carly Rae Jepsen - Party For One
Carly Bae is back with a brand new catchy song about masturbation. My other Queen. I’m not quite sure what i make of her new more adult image and super cheeky video, but I feel like this song is gonna grow on me and I can’t wait for the next full album.
The 1975 - Love It If We Made It
This band. This song. This video. So powerful and such an important message in these troubled times. I couldn’t stop thinking about this for like a week after I saw it.
Missy Higgins - Cemetery
I utterly adore Austalian songstress Missy Higgins and I had no idea that she released an album this year. Oh shit, I just looked at the release date and it’s April. This isn’t even new, but it’s new to me and I AM SHOOK. What a bloody amazing songwriter and the video is stunning. Must hear the rest of the album immediately.
Mark’Oh Feat. Corinna Jane - That Feeling
I’m so proud of my lovely friend Corinna Jane who has just released this addictive, melodic dance tune with big German dance DJ Mark’Oh. The track has already topped the dance charts in Germany and is leading to even more collaborations in the future for Corinna. Check it out! (Warning: it will seriously get stuck in your head!)
Sazzie - Unspoken (Synth Session Demo)
Another of my amazing friends dropped this new track last night - it’s the synth version of a song that will likely be produced up at a later date and tells an imagery-filled, sensual story of the sexual tension between two almost-lovers. I am so proud of how far Sazzie has come with her music this year and I know she has even more great stuff to come so keep watching this space.
Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper - “Shallow”
I know this song probably doesn’t count as “new” anymore, but it’s beautiful and I loved the movie so much. My fave from the soundtrack.
Zara Larsson - Ruin My Life
I really like Zara Larsson and I really like this comeback single. She always mixes such sweet, melodies with edgy instrumentation and the results are definitely pop perfection.
Paloma Faith - Loyal
I wasn’t sure overly fussed about the new Paloma track at first, it’s really nice but a little “Paloma-by-numbers”… However, the stunning music video has really sold it for me. The song is based around her feelings towards her husband after they had their baby. I love to hear women speaking about situations like this and the whole aesthetic to the video is nothing short of a masterpiece.
Robyn - Honey
Synth-pop powerhouse Robyn is returning to our playlists with this dreamy, mesmerising track. The imagery is so strong in the lyrics and her voice is as gorgeous as ever. I’ve listened a little to the new album at work and I also really love “Ever Again”, definitely need to check out the new material properly!
Dua Lipa & BLACKPINK - Kiss And Make Up
WESTERN POP AND K-POP COLLIDE. THIS IS A MOMENT IN HISTORY. (The song is just OK, but the collab needed to be featured hahaha)
Fefe Dobson - Save Me From LA
Not many people in UK will know about Fefe Dobson - my husband got me into her music when we were first dating and he introduced me to all the obscure singer-songwriters he loved. Her old tracks were more pop-rock, but this brand new track (and first new song for years) still displays her same impeccable skill for melody and lyrics. I’m excited for her new chapter of music. (Also, she’s written songs in the past for Selena Gomez, Miley Cyrus and Jordin Sparks!)
Sam Fender - Dead Boys
I don’t really know much about the artist Sam Fender, but this music video popped onto my TV one afternoon and was the kind of song that stopped me in my tracks and forced me to listen. With a very powerful message about men’s mental health, it’s well worth checking out.
Lauv Feat. Julia Michaels - There’s No Way
I really like pretty much everything that Julia Michaels puts out and I keep hearing really great stuff from Lauv too so no wonder this is a great collaboration. The song is so bloody sweet with a beautiful melody. I love it a lot.
Ward Thomas - Never Know
Ward Thomas are a really sweet band who have been growing organically over their past few releases. This video sees them looking and sounding their best yet, I love it!
Alessia Cara - Trust My Lonely
Alessia Cara is one of those artists I keep pricking my ears up at and thinking ooh I should check out more from her. This is her newest release and although the melody is very similar to “Sign Of The Times” by Harry Styles, it’s really addictive and sweet. I liiiiike.
Little Mix - Woman Like Me (Feat. Nicki Minaj)
I couldn’t not include this. Standard Little Mix amazing banger. Oh hiya Nicki love.
Hope you enjoyed all these picks - if there’s anything I missed that was really amazing over the last few months then let me know! :)
