Hello summer! Hello halfway point in the year! Hello sunny June, (my birthday month woo)! I’ve had lots of inspiration for my June playlist this month so I’ll hope you enjoy the choonz I’ve selected! Also… SO MANY BIG POP STARS MAKING COMEBACKS THIS MONTH. I’m in audio heaven.
"Mother's Daughter" - Miley Cyrus
Miley is BACK bitches and this angry, political new track is one of my favourite of the year so far. When the chorus hits with "Don't fuck with my freedom" it's absolutely anthemic and the rap-meets-singing sections make the song so driving and catchy. Really excited for her return to pop and happy she's ruffling feathers already by being so outspoken.
"Never Really Over" - Katy Perry
Katy Perry lost her way a little with her last album, but this comeback is big, bright, beautiful Katy at her finest. It is SUCH a good pop song with hook after hook after hook and it's constantly on repeat in our house, I can't get enough. Welcome back Ms Perry.
"Speechless" - Naomi Scott
This track is in the new live action version of Aladdin and sung by Naomi Scott who plays Jasmine. It's always a tricky task to write something brand new for a beloved musical, but this song hits the mark big time! It has a real "Greatest Showman" vibe with a dynamic melody, empowering lyrics and a truly passionate performance. It really enhances the soundtrack and fits in perfectly with the songs we all know and love. Job well done guys.
"Jealous" - Ingrid Michaelson
Another strong offering from one of my songwriting heroes - her new album is a concept album of songs inspired by "Stranger Things" and so the tracks all have that mysterious, 80's vibe. I can't wait for more!
"Never Said" - Liz Phair
This month one of my biggest dreams came true and I finally saw my songwriting hero Liz Phair perform live. She completely blew me away with her performance and I fell in love with her raw, early work after hearing her play live. This is such a catchy, rock chick track!
"Easier" - 5 Seconds Of Summer
This is quite simply put, a bop. 5SOS are moving away from their pop-punk vibes and getting more synthy and I really love it! The chorus melody is sooo good!
"In My Bed" - Sabrina Carpenter
I am a really big Sabrina Carpenter fan in case you couldn't tell from my playlists and this is another gorgeous, dreamy track with stunning vocals. I am super excited for the full album.
"Ice Cream" - MIKA
I like MIKA. I saw him live once in Brighton and it was such a great, fun, entertaining show. He had fallen off my radar for a while, but this quirky, catchy, summery new track really caught my attention. Cool and cheeky.
"All The Songs" - Will Young
I like Will Young, I think he is a very pleasant pop star and a talented guy. His latest single is a gentle offering, very Radio 2 friendly, but with the sexiest, cheekiest music video you've ever seen to accompany it. Seriously, after watching it I felt as though I had copulated with Will Young. I showed it to Mat and said "I do really like the song too" to which he replied in a daze "there was a song?" So yes. It doesn't have as much impact without Will's arse and hot bod, but it's actually a sweet, catchy love song. Two thumbs up.
"Swine" - Lady Gaga
This track came on my shuffle as I was walking around and I forgot what an absolute CHOON it is. So edgy, so weird, so catchy. Extra points for the pig noises. Go relive it, you'll thank me.
"True Romance" - Ashley Tisdale
I am a really, embarrassingly big Ashley Tisdale fan. Her two pop albums are some of my most played albums of all time and I was so excited to know she was releasing new music this year after such a long gap. I've got to be honest that the new material isn't in the league of her early work, but it's a more mature, sophisticated kind of pop from a woman in her thirties rather than a teenage girl. This track is all about the ups and downs of being in a long term relationship and how one day you love each other and the next you want to kill each other. It's very relatable and very cute, one of my faves of her new work!
"Poetry By Dead Men" - Sara Bareilles
I am really enjoying the new Sara Bareilles record "Amidst The Chaos" - it was a gentle grower of an album, but it's slowly weaving into my heart song by song. This track is a real stand out and lyrically stunning. Sara is the queen of storytelling through music and all the little details make such a perfect picture.
"Glad He's Gone" - Tove Lo
I know a little of Tove Lo's music as she has had a few good hits and soundtrack placements. I don't know if she is a favourite pop star, but she definitely interests me and this track is a solid comeback single.
"You Need To Calm Down" - Taylor Swift
The second single from Tay Tay's upcoming album "Lover" is a fun, empowering LGBTQ+ anthem taking down hateful homophobes. There has been controversy about the track and Taylor's intentions, but I personally think it's amazing and will bring a lot of people out there strength when they really need it. The music video is a spot-the-star feast for the senses and even includes a reconciliation with Katy Perry. World peace is restored! I am SO excited for the full album it's unreal!
"HAPPY HAPPY" - TWICE
I am so proud of my friend Val who was a co-writer on the new Japanese release for K-Pop megastars TWICE. This song is so sweet, summer and catchy, it is absolutely perfect for the girls and I love it so much! Guaranteed to put a massive smile on your face when you listen :)
"Old Town Road - Remix" - Lil Nas X & Billy Ray Cyrus
Hip hop meets country music. Literally amazing and not surprised it was a massive hit in America. Also Billy Ray Cyrus is a silver fox.
"Find U Again" - Mark Ronson Feat. Camila Cabello
I am digging the latest stuff from Mark Ronson and this new Camila Cabello feature is another really strong track - the weird chord change in the chorus is such a great moment. Modern, catchy and effortlessly cool.
"Basic" - Sigrid
I'm soooo digging the new Sigrid album right now and this is one of the best tracks on there. SUCH a fantastic melody and I especially love the part where it strips down to acoustic before going back into the production. Really great track.
"Cross Me" - Ed Sheeran Feat. Chance The Rapper
I'm super excited for Ed's new collaborations album which features more artists than you can fit on one page and seems to be veering into Ed's more urban roots. I like this new track, it's got Ed's classic melody writing and feels like a modern step up for him style wise. Yaaaassss.
"Rescue Me" - OneRepublic
I kept hearing this on Spotify and I kind of liked it. That’s it really. Ryan Tedder is a ledge isn’t he?
"Zimzalabim" - Red Velvet
MY GIRLS RED VELVET ARE BACK. Sadly not with my song (although the Korean lyricist also worked on “You Better Know” cough cough just saying…) But it’s fantastic and ridiculous and addictive and everything else you would expect from a crazy Red Velvet summer single. What is a Zimzalabim? Will we ever know? Does it really matter? Answer on a postcard please.
"Honest" - Paul Andreas Feat. Alix Robson
My bestie Paul Andreas has been working on tracks for his new Greatest Hits album and this new song “Honest” is a real summery bop which will get you dancing and singing along. I love the lyrics about Beauty and the Beast, as well as Alix Robson’s featured vocals which complement the track perfectly. Crank it up as part of your summer playlist!
"On A Roll" - Ashley O
This is the song Miley Cyrus's character sings on the new Black Mirror episode "Rachel, Jack And Ashley Too". The episode was garbage but I bloody love the song SO HERE IT IS.
"Your Song" - Taron Egerton
I saw Rocketman this month and fell in love with the movie, with Elton’s story and with Taron Egerton too. This was my favourite moment of the movie and really made me feel connected to my songwriter roots. A beautiful tribute to a beautiful musician and song.
"Strangers" - Hanne Mjøen
I heard this on a Popjustice playlist - perfect Scandi pop, I really like it!
"Gold" - Victoria Justice
Victoria Justice is one of my favourite humans of all time and I love every pop song she has ever recorded and I blasted this out on the morning on my birthday and it made me very happy. THE END.
"Burn" - Phillipa Soo (from "Hamilton")
I saw Hamilton on my birthday and it was truly showstopping with incredible songs - although I love the upbeat numbers, I had to make "Burn" my playlist pick because it's so beautiful and powerful. For those who know nothing about the story, this is a song from the POV of Hamilton's wife when she found out he had been cheating on her. Her reaction was never recorded in history and in the lyrics she sings about erasing herself from the narrative. It is a thought-provoking concept and the live performance made me cry!
"Ur So Beautiful" - Grace VanderWaal
I am such a fan of Grace VanderWaal, I really got into her when I was in Japan and saw that she was super popular out there. I trust Japan’s taste in Western pop stars as they are usually my all time favourites too, and of course I wasn’t let down. Grace is a wonderful soulful singer and songwriter, wise beyond her young years, and this latest track is just perfect, classic singer-songwriter pop with the right mix of sweetness and edginess. Bring me the new album!
“Call You Mine” - The Chainsmokers Feat. Bebe Rexha
This track came on in Subway yesterday and I was like, oh this is kind of a choon isn’t it? And Mat was like, I’ve been listening to this for ages where have you been? Oh well. Better late to the party than not showing up at all right?
“Icy” - Kim Petras
Kim Petras has been floating around on my radar for a while now and this new track has made me want to get the whole album - it’s just such a banger and takes me back to a classic era of pop but with a really modern twist. LOVE IT.
Thank you for checking out my playlist this month, see you again in July :D
