Summer is in full swing now and there have been some total bops released during July to celebrate! Check out my latest Playlist below, enjoy!! :)
"Beautiful People" - Ed Sheeran Feat. Khalid
Another new banger by Ed Sheeran, this time featuring Khalid in his list of 567937 album collaborators. I absolutely LOVE the video to this of two normal people trying to fit in at an Instagram-perfect supermodel party. The message in the lyrics is perfect. Always love me a bit of Ed Sheeran.
"Spicy" - Herve Pagez, Diplo & Charli XCX
Is this remix/cover/whatever the hell this is of "Wannabe" by Spice Girls necessary in any way whatsoever? No. Is it complete trash? Yes? Am I still listening to it? Hell yes. Charli XCX is my queen and I cannot ignore this offering, no matter how trashy and unnecessary it is.
"Hurt Me" - Meghan Trainor
This new Meghan Trainor song is taken from the TV show Songland which is like X-Factor for songwriters. I totally applied for the UK version and didn't get through and I'm very bitter about it, and I think I could written a song way better than this, but also, I do like it. So this is a very bittersweet moment for me. Also, I love everything Meghan Trainor does. The end.
"Boys" - Lizzo
I finally got the new Lizzo album and it's awesome. This song rocks. I especially like the meme version where someone has put Lizzo's list of boys she fancies to different breeds of dogs. A+ content.
"Starlight" - ALMA
The other new album I got for my birthday was the dreamy, folky soundtrack to Moomin Valley. The songs are so sweet and I particularly love this atmospheric, magical little song by ALMA. Reminds me a little of Studio Ghibli themes and you can totally hear the Scandinavian Forest influence from the whole Moomin aesthetic. Beautiful!
"Celebrity" - Zelo
Hello July K-Pop entry. I saw this guy on Simply K-Pop (which yes, I watch religiously every week) and I thought it was such a cool, modern-sounding song. Love the production and the whole vibe of this.
"GIRL" - Maren Morris
This song has been out a little while now but it's so gorgeous and the music video makes me kind of emotional. I couldn't believe I hadn't already added this to a playlist so it had to be done.
"Summer Days" - Martin Garrix Feat. Macklemore & Patrick Stump
This track is a collision of collaborators from very different genres of music, but the result is a mega summer SMASH. I love the disco vibes mixed with dance production, then add Macklemore's rap and Patrick's awesome vocals and you have a hit on your hands.
"Lovely" - Bonnie McKee
I love Bonnie McKee, she is one of my songwriting heroes, and this new track is a cover of a lesser-known Billie Eilish track. Very unusual combination, but it's cool!
"All For One" - Penny On M.A.R.S Cast
This month, Disney's Penny On M.A.R.S soundtrack went up on Spotify and iTunes. I was very lucky to get two co-writing jobs on this show and I'm super proud of this track especially as it was a topline I wrote and recorded solo in my new studio and it got taken! :) It is a huge confidence boost when a song you toplined solo gets placed, and even more when it's for DISNEY! I hope you like the full-length version of the song, it's cute and young and I absolutely loved writing it. (PS. vid is up to half a million views, woohoo!)
"Senorita" - Shawn Mendes & Camila Cabelo
Sexy. Catchy. Spanish vibes. Lots of Ooh La La-ing. I cannot fault this. Solid bop.
"Hallucinating" - Elohim
This track came up on a random songwriting brief this month and I thought it was so cool and cute. I hadn't heard of Elohim before but she sounds right up my street and I need to delve into more of her music.
"I'm Fakin" - Sabrina Carpenter
I am digging Sabrina Carpenter's new music soooo much and I need the full album NOW! This is another catchy banger. She's so modern and talented and I just love every song she is putting out right now.
"Self-Love" - Call Me Loop
Call Me Loop has been on my radar all year, her songs are so fun, quirky and supremely catchy. This is a really great one with an empowering concept, it kind of takes me back to bubbly, carefree pop songs of yore. I should probably go through her hits and put a few other tracks in future playlists too!
"Like That" - Bea Miller
I heard this track on the Netflix movie "After". The movie was cheesy as all sin, but this song is awesome.
"Young & In Love" - Ingrid Michaelson
I am really enjoying the new "Stranger Songs" concept album by Ingrid Michaelson and this is a stand-out track for me, I’m obsessed! The chorus melody is beautiful and the whole vibe gives that real wistful nostalgia feeling. She is such a talent, one of my all-time favourite songwriters.
"Forgive Or Forget" - Ina Wroldsen
I am such a massive Ina Wroldsen fan, her songwriting for others is amazing, I can spot her involvement in a track a mile off, and her own material is equally as great. This track has a pretty addictive chorus, not as good as her last one "Obsessed" but there is still something distinctly "Ina" about it.
"1%" - Oscar Scheller & Lily Allen
Lily is back (YAY) on this collaboration with new artist Oscar Scheller. His deep rich voice blends so well with her sweet, high delivery and the song is classic Lily with a clever concept and laid-back ska-tinged production. Really like this.
"Wish You Well" - Sigala & Becky Hill
File this one under "chavvy dance tracks I shouldn't rationally like, but I do".
"Just A Dream" - Nelly
This came on shuffle in the car the other day and me and Mat were screaming along dramatically - throwback CHOON. Even if "it was only just a dream" is grammatically clunky. Bad form Nelly.
"I Wish" - Hayley Kiyoko
Hayley Kiyoko is one of those artists I keep meaning to check out because I've heard so much buzz about her - I finally tuned in to her new single "I Wish", it's the perfect mixture of cool and dreamy with a beautiful chorus and an instantly iconic music video look. I better start making my way through her back catalogue, it's taken me way too long to get into her!
"Gone" - Charli XCX & Christine & The Queens
I know I've already had Charli XCX on this month's list, but this song is a CHOON and the chemistry between her and Christine is electric. Sexy, modern, awesome song.
"Love You Like That" - Dagny
My friend Anna showed me this track this month because of it's startling similarity to "Never Really Over" by Katy Perry... KATY YOU UTTER THIEF. I still love that track. But let's give the original and obvious influence some love too!
"How Do You Sleep?" - Sam Smith
I am living for Sam Smith's new style and sound - this latest track is super modern, sassy and cool, plus Sam is unleashing his inner diva in the video. I think the dance production route is a huge step up for his career and really shows what he is capable of with his creativity,
"Simple Things" - Alexander Cardinale Feat. Christina Perri
I adore Christina Perri - her songs are like a warm bath on a cold night, so comforting and lovely. This new song is a duet with Alexander Cardinale and while it's nothing world-changing, it's still a sweet track in her signature style that is bound to make you smile.
"The Archer" - Taylor Swift
TayTay has dropped another track from her upcoming "Lover" album, this time a super dreamy, wistful number with classic Taylor melodies. I've got to be honest, it's not my favourite release from her, but I'm such a huge Tay fan that I'm sure it will grow on me and I had to include it in my playlist regardless!
"I'll Be Back Someday" - Tegan & Sara
I am so excited for the return of sister duo Tegan & Sara who are revamping old teenage material for a new album in 2019. "I'll Be Back Someday" is a typical T&S affair, but I love it. Give me more. Stat.
"Ready" - Alessia Cara
I think Alessia Cara is a really talented and underrated artist, her songs are always solid little pop tunes and this new track is laid-back and summery with a great chorus. Understated but enjoyable.
"Mine" - Paul Andreas
My friend Paul released his emotional new country ballad "Mine" this month. It is very different to his usual style, but really suits his voice and shows a different side to his music. One of my faves from his new material, amazing job Paulie Pie!
"Crown" - Stormzy
I heard this track in an Uber and it was one of those moments where you go woah this is a good song, who IS that?! I thought it was probably Stormzy and I was right. Very powerful and beautiful with underlying gospel vibes. I can see what all the fuss is about.
"None Of My Friends" - Liz Lawrence
I don't know much about Liz Lawrence, but this indie-pop, cynical, rock chick track made me stop in my tracks with how phenomenally good it is. With lyrics about the state of the world fucking everyone up and secretly wanting to stay in and cancel plans with everyone, I feel like this speaks for a generation. It's raw and real and rocky and I think it's fantastic.
Hope you liked July’s picks, see you again in August!!!
