Happy April! Happy Easter! Happy Drip Drip Drop Little April Showers (and sun, we’ve actually had sun too…) During April there were a lot of awesome songs released so prepare for a Playlist infused with all sorts from chilled pretty numbers to crazy K-Pop… I have loved this month’s releases and hope you guys will too!
"Church" - Aly & AJ
I have been a massive Aly & AJ fan since I first discovered their Disney friendly pop many years ago through my husband (Potential Breakup Song is a CHOON) - they have really grown up
"Phases" - ASHLEE + EVAN
Former pop-rock star Ashlee Simpson is back making new music with her husband Evan, only she has ditched the old sound for a more soulful, chilled vibe. I loved teen pop Ashlee and I am really digging this new sophisticated version of her music. Her vocals are lush and work really well with Evan's soul voice. Very nice stuff.
"Sunflower" - Vampire Weekend Feat. Steve Lacy
I think Vampire Weekend are a really interesting little indie band and this song is so sweet and quirky with crazy jumping guitar chords and a cute lyrical visual. It's very unique, fun and creative, I so need to buy this album.
"Four Seasons" - Taeyeon
K-Pop Queen Taeyeon returned to the scene this month with the jazzy little number Four Seasons. Taeyeon is one of my all-time favourite K-Pop stars and it's lovely to hear her back, the B-Side Blue is also a real stand-out track.
"Country Girl" - Jessie Buckley
I went to see Country Girl at the cinema this month and FELL IN LOVE WITH IT. Jessie Buckley is truly a rising star and her gorgeous, husky vocals were perfect for the story of a gritty Scottish girl trying to make it as a country singer. his is the opening song in the movie and sets the tone for the whole character and her amazing story.
"Close To Me" - Ellie Goulding, Diplo & Red Velvet
My Red Velvet girls are making their way to the west and have added Korean verses to the Ellie Goulding/Diplo smash Close To Me. I LOVE how much their vocals in Korean have changed the song, it sounds truly K-Pop now and brings out a whole new flavour to a familiar melody. I hope this will be the start of their rise with Western audiences because they totally have to play London so I can cry in joy in the front row.
"Cool" - Jonas Brothers
I love Jonas Brothers so much and their next single release after Sucker is a laid-back, retro singalong with gorgeous melodies and vocals. I wanna crank this up on a late night summer drive around the city.
"Kill This Love" - BLACKPINK
In the wake of BTS, K-Pop girlgroup BLACKPINK are set to be the next Korean superstars to take over the world. This song is absolutely BADASS and I love the chanting, military vibes. Utter choon and I'm so happy it's getting the international recognition it deserves.
"Still Sleeping" - Jai Wolf
I am not sure who Jai Wolf is (the DJ or the vocalist?), but this was one from a Popjustice playlist and the 80's vibes and amazing storytelling lyrics really stuck out to me from the songs around it - an all-round brilliant track.
"Older" - Sasha Sloane
I don't know a lot about Sasha Sloane, but I have seen her popping up on new music playlists and this beautiful track really struck me with it's honest, reflective lyrics about getting older and seeing your parents as humans not heroes. I had to add it to the list and I really want to know more of her stuff now.
"Flatline" - Orla Gartland
Another quirky banger from indie pop singer-songwriter Orla Garland. I am loving everything she is putting out recently, I feel she has really evolved her sound and she is going to keep growing and getting bigger and bigger. One to watch.
"Silhouette" - Djamila
I have written with Djamila a few times and had the track "Invisible" placed on her Girl album last year - this is another track from that album that came up on my Spotify Shower Playlist and it's absolutely gorgeous! Her vocals are stunning and her music is perfect emotional pop, I'm so happy to work with her and you all need to check her out!
"Kingdom Of One" - Maren Morris
I am one of those strange people who don't watch Game Of Thrones (I'm not big into fantasy and I faint at the sight of blood so it didn't seem like a good match for me), but I am LOVING the music coming out of the soundtrack of songs inspired by the show. Country singer Maren Morris has released this gorgeous, dark, tension-filled track that mixes sweet beautiful melodies with sinister lyrics of power struggles for the throne and the prices paid to get it. Totally epic, almost makes me want to start watching the bloody thing myself.
"Better By Myself" - Hey Violet
Hey Violet is one of those bands that every time I hear one of their songs I go OOH I LOVE THIS why don't I have any of their albums. Well this song made me do that. Awesome female-fronted indie-pop band with really catchy melodies. Check em out!
"Cute Without You" - Emma Blackery
I really like Youtuber musician Emma Blackery, I think her songs have that awesome DIY, heartfelt feel and she writes in that mixture of pop meets singer-songwriter that I love. This is a very Taylor Swift, fun style of track that I believe she wrote for a 24-hour song challenge. As the title says, it's cute!
"Not Yours Never Was" - Hannah Jane Lewis
I am SO digging Hannah Jane Lewis right now - fun, catchy, hooky, solid pop. This new track has such a fun hook line on the chorus, I feel like she gets better and better with every new song. Looking forward to where she goes next.
"Swimming" - Kero Kero Bonito
Kero Kero Bonito are a very silly, sweet band who take huge influence from Japanese culture and J-Pop. They have mellowed out a lot in their recent releases and Swimming is a vibey, chill-out kind of track with their usual brand of quirky on-the-nose lyrics and kooky little melody lines. They are an acquired taste but if you're into it then you'll love it.
"Boy With Luv" - BTS Feat. Halsey
"Power Is Power" - SZA, The Weeknd & Travis Scott
Another "inspired by Game Of Thrones" track and it's so dark and cool, reminds me of the kind of songs you get on Hunger Games of 50 Shades soundtracks. I so gotta get this album!
"Soulmate" - Lizzo
What can I say? Another absolute banger from the new Queen Of Pop. No wonder she went straight to #1 with her new album.
"Uh Huh" - Jade Bird
Mat recently bought the Jade Bird album and picked this out to me as one of his faves - it's super sassy with a brilliant quirky hookline and out of this world vocals, it really reminds me of the acoustic artists I grew up loving. Big love for Jade Bird!
"Saw Lightning" - Beck
I've always been a pretty big Beck fan to be honest with you. We have our ups and downs, I mean let's not talk about the Southampton gig I went to that was absolutely terrible or those dreary album tracks I tend to skip when they come up... No, let's focus on the GOOD Beck. The funky, experimental, catchy, boundary-pushing Beck. This new track is THAT Beck. And I'm loving it.
"Suggestions" - Orelia Has Orchestra
I am obsessed with Pretty Little Liars at the moment and this emotional track plays during the Season 2 finale. It really stuck out to me as being a fantastic song so I added it to April's playlist. Absolutely perfect for big TV drama moments.
"Julien" - Carly Rae Jepsen
The next track from Carly Bae's upcoming album "Dedication" - it has seriously catchy disco vibes and I'm loving it. Soooo excited about her comeback!
"ME!" - Taylor Swift Feat. Brendon Urie
TAYLOR SWIFT IS BACK!!! And this new comeback duet with Brendon Urie is so sweet, so fun and so catchy. The video is OUT OF THIS WORLD. I am obsessed. Welcome back to my all-time favourite music artist, I'm so ready for this era.
"Gimme Gimme" - Meiko
I am a big-fan of singer-songwriter Meiko and she's back with a new album in her signature indie acoustic style. Gimme Gimme is apparently about an online shopping addiction she developed when she moved to Nashville from LA. The swirling harmonies and driving rhythm are awesome and really tell the story of an addiction.
"Foolish" - Meghan Trainor
Meghan Trainor released a little pre-album EP in February full of loved-up songs about her marriage to her new hubby. I've been listening to these tracks a lot this month and Foolish is a real fave - love her quirky, witty lyrics and singalong choruses.
"Doom Days" - Bastille
I really like Bastille and this dramatic apocalyptic pop track (apopalyptic?) is a very welcome return. Love the lyrics and the overall driving tension in this song. Dan's vocals are top notch too.
"Dancing On My Own" - Elle Fanning
There is a new movie coming out called "Teen Spirit" starring Elle Fanning as a teen singing sensation (yep, she can sing). I don't know much else about it, but it definitely sounds up my street and I'm liking Elle's vocals on this Robyn track. It would have been nice to hear some original songs for the movie, but "Dancing On My Own" is a pretty darn good cover choice.
"Ready Now" - dodie
The new Moomin Valley cartoon series has a very dreamy soundtrack to go along with the pretty animation and one of the tracks is by dodie who I adore. This is a really lovely signature dodie ballad with lots of beautiful harmonies and arrangements. I think it will sound amazing on the show - she produced it all in her bedroom too! Hero.
Hope you all enjoy this month’s playlist, see you again at the end of May! :D
